For three decades, the brutal killing of a 15-year-old boy whose body was dumped in Valencia Park went unsolved.

Then, in February, police announced that modern DNA technology had led cold-case detectives to a suspect: a third-strike offender serving time in prison.

On Monday, the inmate, Russell Taylor, 56, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for killing Dewan Emerson in 1987, the District Attorney’s Office said.
