Corrections issues layoff projections for parole division
By Jon Ortiz, Sacramento Bee -- The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation plans to terminate 841 employees in its parole division by September 2013, according to a new document issued Wednesday and obtained by The State Worker. "Reductions reflect actual 'bodies' to be eliminated once unallocated positions, vacancies, limited term, out of class and retired annuitants have been deducted," footnotes in the document says.
Calif. Governor Brown Announces Appointments for Board of Parole Hearings
By Valerie Gotten, California Newswire -- Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. on Wednesday announced the following appointments. First, Dan Figueroa, 60, of Blythe, has been appointed to the Board of Parole Hearings. Figueroa worked at Chuckawalla Valley State Prison as a correctional counselor from 1996 to 2010 and as a business services supervisor from 1992 to 1996. He served as a property controller with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation from 1988 to 1992. Figueroa worked at the Board of Equalization from 1982 to 1988, serving as a statewide recruitment coordinator and a business tax representative. This position requires Senate confirmation and the compensation is $111,845. Figueroa is a Democrat.

Washington Post -- Most inmates are trying to get out of prison, but authorities say they caught a California parolee trying to sneak back in. Corrections Sgt. Tony Quinn says 48-year-old Marvin Lane Ussery was spotted late Wednesday night scaling the 7-foot tall, barbed wire-topped fence that encircles a large wooded area behind the California State Prison in Sacramento.

MSNBC -- Thermal imaging cameras recorded a parolee sneaking back into New Folsom State Prison at 1:30 a.m. Thursday, prison officials said. "We quickly determined we did not have an escape. We found the suspect hiding in bushes near the Prison Industry Authority area," prison spokesman Tony Quinn said. Marvin Lane Ussery, 48, was arrested on suspicion of being a felon on prison grounds.

By Bill Lindelof, Sacramento Bee -- Correctional officers at New Folsom Prison searched for contraband after they caught a former inmate who they said snuck back onto prison grounds. Marvin Lane Ussery, 48, was arrested Thursday for being an ex-felon on prison grounds. Ussery was paroled June 1, 2009 after serving time for robbery. He was once held in California State Prison, Sacramento -- sometime called New Folsom. Correctional officers have noticed a trend in which ex-inmates with knowledge of prison grounds will climb a fence into an institution and hide a backpack of cellphones and drugs. Later, an inmate weed-abatement crew will smuggle the contraband back into cells.

Folsom Prison trespasser found and apprehended
By Paul Janes, ABC 10 -- Police were called to Folsom prison Thursday morning after parolee Marvin Ussrey broke "in" to jail. According to Sgt. Quinn of the Folsom Police Department, officers discovered a bicycle near the perimeter fence where they believe Ussrey, 48, hopped over and onto prison grounds during the early hours of the morning.

ABC 7 -- A man has been detained after attempting to break into a prison. Authorities searched the grounds of Folsom Prison around 2 a.m. Thursday after a man was spotted climbing over the fence. After several hours, a CHP helicopter spotted 48-year-old Martin Ussery laying on the ground near the prison's recycling center.

State, County Officials Grapple with California's Overcrowded Prisons
By David Marsh, Valley Voice -- Officials in Sacramento continue to struggle for answers as to how the state will meet a Federal Court imposed deadline to reduce California's inmate population from its current level of around 144,000 prisoners to a total of 110,000 by June 27, 2013. Latest reports out of the state's capitol have Gov. Jerry Brown optimistically predicting he's still going to make it, while an August 5 report released by the state's nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office concludes that the state will likely miss the mark by at least several thousand inmates.
